Two factors define the automation challenge in bakery more than any other.

The first is product variability. Bread, pastries, and baked goods rarely present in a perfectly uniform shape. Even machine-produced loaves have natural variation in profile, and hand-finished products vary further still. Automation that cannot account for this will either miss picks or damage the product, and neither is acceptable.

The second is fragility. Baked goods are not forgiving of heavy-handed handling. The end effector that picks the product, the speed at which it moves, the placement into the tray or box: every element of the motion needs to be calibrated for the specific product being packed.

Getting both right simultaneously, at production speeds, is where the engineering challenge lies.

How the UniPAKer Handles It 

The UniPAKer uses

delta robot technology with innovative end effectors designed specifically for the product in question. Rather than adapting your product to a standard machine, we design the tooling around what you are packing: the shape, the weight, the fragility, the packaging format.

For bakery,

this typically means low-impact vacuum or mechanical gripping, and adjusting the trajectory of motion to ensure product is handled gently while maintaining the pick consistency needed to place accurately at volume. End effectors are configured to accommodate the full range of bakery products, from structured loaves to flat, flexible items such as naan breads, and softer or irregularly shaped products that standard tooling cannot reliably handle.

The system also integrates

with Brillopak’s PAKSight vision technology, which identifies and rejects product that does not meet quality standards, including misshapen items or product that is overbaked, at line speed, without slowing the pack rate.
